The McSence Employment Co-operative (MEC) was introduced by McSence to help the young people who had completed a six month “Get Ready for Work” training programme with McSence.

When they were on the programme they earned £55.00 per week and learned basic skills in the Plumbing, Electrical and Painting & Decorating trades in our purpose built training centre.

Due to the current downturn in the construction industry there has unfortunately been no guarantee of employment after the programme for some of the trainees, so, the company came up with the idea of getting them to earn money for themselves by setting up a co-operative under the guidance of the company (with the backing of the McSence board and Co-operative Development Scotland) by washing cars and vans in the business park during conferences and meetings, and in local public car parks and football grounds and by providing carpet cleaning and painting the local Community High School perimeter fence all for a fee. It costs as little as £4.00 to have your car washed.

This work has now been extended and MEC now undertakes Painting and Decorating and other property maintenance work such as gardening work at reduced rates to provide additional work experience. All trades work is supervised and signed off by our qualified tradesmen.

Through this work McSence guarantees them a wage of between £65.00 and £99.00 per week depending on their income and more importantly keeps them in a working frame of mind and “off the couch”.
